“I was determined to become the best and find the way to do it. If nobody was going to give me advice, I was going to find a way to make it happen. I was determined to accomplish my dreams. I wouldn’t let anyone stop me. I would control my own destiny.”
When I was a junior at Adrian High School I decided to see the school counselor, to ask what I needed to be the best football player I could possibly be. I needed to know how to get a scholarship. I will never forget his response. He said: “You know Jason, the odds are small. You should think of things other than football. Just give it up and look into some other things.” He wasn’t much help, so I went to my football coach, Coach Swindle. I went straight up to him and said, “Coach, I want to play college football.” Coach was no help either. He said, “Buck, you are not good enough to play college football.” I asked if I could use the weight room after school to workout. All he could say was “Buck, you won’t make it, give it up, you don’t have what it takes.”
I asked again if I could work out after school and he still refused to open the weight room or help in any way. I didn’t let this stop me. I devised a plan to break into the school weight room after school hours. During school hours, I’d lift the latch on the window. Then after school I would push the window open and drag myself through the 6 foot tall opening and land on my hands rolling out onto the floor. I lifted weights by myself. I would go through all the lifts on the creaky old universal machine and then lock up the room to leave. I wasn’t going to let anyone in the world stop me.
I was determined to become the best and find the way to do it. If nobody was going to give me advice, I was going to find a way to make it happen. I was determined to accomplish my dreams. I wouldn’t let anyone stop me. I would control my own destiny.
